A Battle of Wits and Numbers

The week of May 27 marked Pi Day in our school. We had a highly anticipated Math Pi contest that had both students and teachers on the edge of their seats. This kind of contest offers an avenue to help highlight talent in a challenging, fun, and structured environment. Competing in a Pi contest is one of many teachable moments to demonstrate a student’s intellectual capacity and commitment to the field.

Round after round, the competition was intense. Each participant pushed themselves to the limit, their determination shining through as they rattled off digits with lightning speed. The audience watched in amazement as the numbers flowed effortlessly from the contestants’ mouths, marveling at their incredible feats of memory and concentration.

As the final moments of the contest approached, it became clear that victory would be hard-fought. But in the end, it was Miral Harun who emerged triumphant, her face radiant with joy as she recited an astonishing 771 digits of Pi flawlessly. Following closely behind Miral was Heran Legesse, whose impressive recitation of 574 digits secured her a well-deserved second place. And in third place stood Blen Daniel, her mastery of Pi evident as she confidently recited 473 digits.

The Math Pi contest wasn’t just about numbers and competition; it was about passion, dedication, and the limitless potential of our students’ minds.

Here are the top five winners of the Math Pi contest:

1. Miral Harun: 771 digits

A captivating day at One Planet International School’s Kindergarten Division as our little ones went on a journey of imagination during our much-anticipated Career Day!

Dressed in a delightful array of professions, from doctors and plotters to firefighters, artists, etc., our students embraced the spirit of exploration and possibility.

Laughter filled the air as they shared their dreams and aspirations, igniting a spark of curiosity and inspiration in every heart. It was a joyous celebration of learning, creativity, and the boundless potential within each child.

Exploring Biodiversity

It was an enriching experience our Environmental Club and the school recently had during their visit to the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute. Led by our passionate students and dedicated club leaders, the visit was an educational journey into the field of preserving seeds and genes, vital for our planet’s biodiversity.

At the Institute, our students dig into the crucial role of preserving seeds and genes in safeguarding our environment and ensuring food security for future generations. They had the privilege of engaging with experts who shared invaluable insights into the methods and importance of conservation efforts.

Witnessing firsthand the dedication and commitment of the institute’s team left an insightful impact on our students. It not only deepened their understanding of environmental conservation but also ignited a sense of responsibility toward preserving our natural heritage.

We are immensely grateful to the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute for welcoming us and for their dedication to environmental stewardship. The visit has inspired our Environmental Club to continue promoting the protection of our planet.

Together, let us nurture a sustainable future for generations to come.

Pages of Promise

The kindergarten division hosts Reading Day annually, where they invite parents to witness their children’s reading skills, and this year was no exception.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, the beaming faces of our little angels shone brightly as they waited expectantly but patiently for the program to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Kg ground.

The kindergarten manager, Ms. Desta, officiated the day, stressed the importance of inculcating a reading culture in children at a tender age, and pointed out a number of ways to do so.

The youngsters introduced themselves to the parents before they began to read. The readings were differentiated according to the 3 class levels: LKG (the CVC words), UKG (simple sentences), and Fat Cat Story Book, whereas Year 1 read Scooby Doo and different quotes from popular people around the world. The parents were unable to read due to the limited time.

It was a very interesting experience, and the little ones performed exceptionally! The event came to a conclusion at 12:30 p.m. We thank the parents who participated in the program.

Empowering Parenthood

We are thrilled to share an exciting milestone in parental engagement with you. We spent a significant moment as CEO and Co-Founder of One Planet International School, Mr. Zelalem Amare, led a training session for parents for the second time, following the positive response to the first session, focusing on ‘Understanding and Assisting Junior Youths and Adolescents’.

Through captivating narratives and insights shared during the session, parents gained an invaluable understanding of their children’s needs, challenges, and aspirations, as well as ways to foster an environment for effective mentoring through love and support as a family, school, and community.

The session concluded with attendees meeting in groups to discuss their experiences and reflect on the training. They also felt inspired and equipped with a basic understanding of navigating parenthood confidently. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents who participated in the training for their support in shaping a brighter future for our children.

Wings of Inspiration

We are delighted to share a wonderful opportunity that our students recently had the privilege to experience for their future careers. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing enriching educational and occupational experiences, a group of junior and senior high school students from One Planet International School were honored to visit the Ethiopian Aviation University, courtesy of an invitation extended by the Ethiopian Airline Group.

During that special visit, our students had the unique opportunity to explore the vast and dynamic world of aviation firsthand. They were warmly welcomed into the university compound, where they engaged in a captivating journey through various departments and facilities.

From the engineering workshops to the state-of-the-art laboratories, our students immersed themselves in an array of interactive and educational activities. They had the chance to witness cutting-edge technologies in action, gain insights into aviation research and development, and interact with esteemed faculty members and industry professionals.

Moreover, the visit provided our students with invaluable insights into the multifaceted field of aviation and inspired them to envision the boundless possibilities that lie ahead. It was a day filled with discovery, learning, and inspiration, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Ethiopian Airline Group and the Ethiopian Aviation University for their gracious hospitality and for opening their doors to our students. Their generosity and support have enriched our educational program and empowered our students to dream big and reach for the skies.

We look forward to continuing to provide our students with transformative experiences that broaden their horizons and ignite their passion, enabling them to search for their unique potential.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in nurturing the growth and development of our students.
