Sharing Green Vision

One Planet’s Environment Club members had the chance to exchange ideas with Mrs. Celia Wade Brown, who is a Green Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. Celia took time out of her busy schedule, whilst on a trip to London, to join a live video conference with our Environment Club members.

The former Mayor of Wellington and environmental advocate answered interesting questions about her inspirational life experiences posed by the students. Wade Brown was very encouraging about our Environment Club’s vision for a greener lifestyle by following the Four R’s: Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, and Repeat. She was also appreciative of their plastic bottle reduction drive, medicinal garden school plantings, and vernicle garden proposals.

The Green Party MP made us all laugh by recalling the moment that she arrived for a high-profile meeting with Hilary Clinton on a bicycle wearing second-hand but formal attire! Celia encouraged our club members to be politically aware leaders that work with local authorities on a grass-roots level in order to affect positive change and social action.

The Nature Lovers Club’s Li’elena Hailu was present and introduced her school’s environmental action projects. All in all, the meeting was a resounding success and left all present feeling more aware about how to tackle the pressing environmental issues and challenges that we face.

Celia Wade Brown was very impressed with how “well prepared” our students were and pledged to have a follow-up conference with us from New Zealand in a couple of months’ time!

We would like to thank Mrs. Brown for her willingness to dedicate her time and share her experiences with our students.

Fruits & Friendship

October 10, the Virtue Department at One Planet International School held a special event celebrating the virtues of friendship.

The activities emphasized the importance of friendship, encouraging students to strengthen their bonds with peers. The message was clear: just as different fruits come together to create something beautiful, our students, though diverse, are united as members of the same human family.

The event was a meaningful reminder of the values we strive to instill in our students — celebrating diversity, building strong relationships, and fostering a sense of community.

Exploring Global Horizons

last week we had a special visit as part of the EdTour—Ethiopia, Fall 2024. A group of distinguished U.S. universities, including Rider University, Purdue University, Iowa State University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Arizona, visited our campus.

In addition, the recent university visit on Monday, October 7, was a great success! Students from Years 11, 12, and 13 had the valuable opportunity to meet with representatives from prestigious international universities and explore educational pathways around the world.

The delegation included representatives from Navitas (Canada, Australia, UK, New Zealand, USA), Audencia Business School (France), University of Windsor (Canada), Saskatchewan Polytech (Canada), Kaplan Business School (KBS), Australia, Global Education Group (GEDU), UK, Malta, Canada, Oxford International Groups, Manipal College (Dubai), Middlesex University (Dubai), and British Council (IELTS Test Representatives).

Students also had the chance to connect with their peers from other international schools in Addis Ababa, making the event a wonderful networking opportunity.

It was an inspiring event, and we are confident it broadened our students’ perspectives on higher education options.

Trivia Night

On October 4 our middle and high school students had an unforgettable Trivia Night!

From 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., students engaged in a fun-filled evening of educational and entertaining questions. Their enthusiasm and teamwork truly shone through, making it an amazing event.

It was a wonderful opportunity for them to challenge themselves, learn, and have a great time together!

Thank you for your continued support.

“I can be a friend…”

“I can be a friend…”

This morning, our primary students enjoyed a fun and engaging event on the virtue of friendship. They learned valuable lessons through the inspiring story of two lifelong friends, shared through a playful performance and lively songs.

The students were captivated by the heartwarming experiences and left with a deeper appreciation for the importance of friendship.

It was a joyful and meaningful time for all!

This joyful experience not only entertained but also left a lasting impression on our young learners, reminding them of the beauty and strength of true friendship.

We hope they continue to cherish and nurture the friendships they build throughout their school journey.

A Battle of Wits and Numbers

The week of May 27 marked Pi Day in our school. We had a highly anticipated Math Pi contest that had both students and teachers on the edge of their seats. This kind of contest offers an avenue to help highlight talent in a challenging, fun, and structured environment. Competing in a Pi contest is one of many teachable moments to demonstrate a student’s intellectual capacity and commitment to the field.

Round after round, the competition was intense. Each participant pushed themselves to the limit, their determination shining through as they rattled off digits with lightning speed. The audience watched in amazement as the numbers flowed effortlessly from the contestants’ mouths, marveling at their incredible feats of memory and concentration.

As the final moments of the contest approached, it became clear that victory would be hard-fought. But in the end, it was Miral Harun who emerged triumphant, her face radiant with joy as she recited an astonishing 771 digits of Pi flawlessly. Following closely behind Miral was Heran Legesse, whose impressive recitation of 574 digits secured her a well-deserved second place. And in third place stood Blen Daniel, her mastery of Pi evident as she confidently recited 473 digits.

The Math Pi contest wasn’t just about numbers and competition; it was about passion, dedication, and the limitless potential of our students’ minds.

Here are the top five winners of the Math Pi contest:

1. Miral Harun: 771 digits
2. Heran Legesse: 574 digits
3. Blen Daniel: 473 digits
4. Robera Abayneh: 383 digits
5. Soliyana Mulugeta: 288 digits

Congratulations to the contestants and the winners
