Parent or Guardian

One Planet International School’s Conceptual Framework describes parents/guardians as one of the indispensable champions of the educational process.   Parents/guardians play a crucial role in the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of their children.   Furthermore, we see the advancement of civilization as being driven by three main protagonists or champions: the individual, institutions, and the community. Where the relationships between these protagonists in the society at large are at times characterized by discord and struggle for power, at One Planet, we aim to demonstrate relationships that are characterized by cooperation and reciprocity.  For these reasons, One Planet continues to insist on, welcome and encourage the full participation of parents/guardians and other stakeholders in the life of our school. In this respect the following are responsibilities parents should assume:
To be partners in the education process. Parents cannot be passive in the learning process and consider the school as alone in this responsibility. Parents are expected to be engaged in the process both at the school and at home. Parents are encouraged to assist their children in their school work and to follow their children’s progress by communicating with teachers through the Communication Book and by attending Parent-Teacher meetings. Parents are invited to consult with teachers, participate in Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) activities and support extracurricular activities.

To provide a safe and loving home environment for their children. It has been established that the home environment has a significant impact on the learning of the child and it is the responsibility of parents to see that the home is a welcoming, loving and safe space for their children.

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)

The Parent Teacher Student Association’s (PTSA) mission is to “create a positive and uplifting environment where parents, teachers and staff can work together to serve the needs of children and to enhance the quality of education. The Association will encourage parents to actively participate through volunteerism, fundraising, extra-curricular activities, and teacher support and encouragement.”
Functions of the PTSA
The following are examples of the types of activities that are in line with the PTSA mission. All projects should be approved by the school administrative committee. Financing for such projects could come from the fund raising projects undertaken by the PTSA.

  • The PTSA may undertake projects for the general development of the school with the approval of the school administrative committee.
  • The PTSA may organize various ongoing or occasional activities and special events (such as sports programs, after-school clubs, art and science fairs, festivals) to supplement the academic program and enhance the school’s sense of community;
  • The PTSA may find ways to support and encourage teaching staff by providing awards, recognition, and training opportunities or scholarships.
  • The PTSA may encourage members to volunteer time and resources for use of the school.
  • The PTSA may develop reward coupons to give to children as rewards and positive reinforcement.
  • The PTSA may raise funds to make capital improvements to the school, install new playground equipment, making improvements to the library, computer or science labs.
